Q.A. BULLETINS

NUMBER FNS-QA-001
PRODUCT 3141 PRINTERS with FINISys Inc. SCANNER UPGRADE
SUBJECT REVISED RECOMMENDED DC VALUES
DATE REV. JULY 7, 1996

1. OVERVIEW

Significant improvements in chromatic correction, reduction of subject failures and simplicity of operation have been realized with the introduction of the FINISys scanner upgrade. However, some installations may be experiencing problems with certain flash shots and backlit scenes, that may print too light when using the originally recommended DC values.

Original values were around:

SKY -.500 / SNOW 0.000 / FL1 1.200 / FL2 0.900 / GREEN 0.500

Further study of results with these or similar numbers show that not all density corrections are printed optimally. Also, when printing to the original aims, problems may be more prevalent.

2. NEW RECOMMENDATIONS

Work done by Linda Glover in Cincinnati and at a recent QA training class (instructed by FINISys’ R.Ganahl) indicates that better results are obtainable with the FINISys upgrade. When printing selects on the SKY parameter, it became evident that many flash scenes are not recognized as flash and are classified as sky instead (which will further lighten them). Examples of scenes that fall into this category are flash shots with a white ceiling or wall at the edge of the frame. Since the Flash recognition looks for high density in the center and low density at the frame edge, the program will not recognize above examples as a flash.

Newly recommended DC values are:

SKY 0.000 / SNOW 0.000 / FL1 0.500 / FL2 0.500 / GREEN 0.000

As can be seen, the overall density corrections are being reduced for all parameters. This will result in a possible overall lightening of the work, which may necessitate establishing a new aim that is perhaps a button or more darker. Overall you should expect a better density uniformity within orders.
